If you are a medical marijuana patient or advocate in Reno, NV, plan on waiting until 2014 before the rules that will regulate Nevada medical marijuana dispensaries in Reno are established. The Reno City Council will hold off on developing medical marijuana dispensary regulations as well as the guiding policies for all medical marijuana related sales until the state regulations are developed first.
State to establish Nevada medical marijuana dispensary regulations first.
The Reno City Council voted this past Wednesday to revisit establishing medical marijuana regulations in April of 2014, giving the state time to establish their regulations first. After the state has established the medical marijuana related regulations, the City Council will then review them to determine if they will be adequate enough to adopt for the city of Reno. Cadence Matijevich, Assistant City Manager of Reno, said that the city will wait on developing any marijuana related regulations until they have been established at the state level first.
Medical marijuana in Nevada has been legal since 2000 when the voters approved a constitutional amendment, but the missing piece was establishing a way for medical marijuana patients to legally obtain the medicinal drug. Under the new law signed in June 2013, those patients will soon have a way to get their pot – Nevada medical marijuana dispensaries. Up to ten medical marijuana dispensaries are planned to open in Washoe County alone.
